Verdict
Heat the person and the room you’re in — a small fan or ceramic heater for quick warm-up, an oil-filled radiator for steadier background heat, plus throws and hot-water bottles so you aren’t blasting empty space.

Who it's for
Renters, WFH desks in chilly spare rooms, and anyone watching the thermostat after last winter’s bills — cost-conscious, not whole-house HVAC.
Why now
September is when UK homes feel the first overnight chill. Sorting a safe secondary heater and soft layers now is cheaper than emergency buys during a cold snap blackout of stock.
Match the gadget to the job: fan/ceramic for a short burst while you work, oil-filled for a room you’ll sit in for hours, heated cushion or panel for local comfort. Always follow the merchant’s safety guidance and never leave portable heaters unattended.
Soft warmth extras — hot water bottle, hand warmers, fleece throw — often cut the urge to raise the whole-home thermostat. Guide prices below come straight from the catalogue; confirm kWh and features on the merchant page.
No portable heater is "energy-saving" in the sense of turning less electricity into more heat. They all turn electricity into heat at much the same rate. What saves money is a good thermostat, a timer and only heating the space and time you need.
Every heater lists its power in watts. To estimate the cost per hour on full power, divide the wattage by 1,000 and multiply by your electricity unit rate from your bill. At an example rate of 25p per kWh, a 2,000W heater costs about 50p an hour on full, and a 1,500W oil-filled radiator about 37.5p. A thermostat that cycles the heater on and off once the room is warm brings the real cost down. Our article on heated throws vs heaters vs central heating walks through the sums with examples.
The honest conclusion for most homes on a standard tariff: a portable electric heater makes sense for one room for a limited time, not as the main heating for a whole home. If you sit still for long periods, a heated throw or seat pad uses far less power. Our warmth without the bill guide covers those options.
A small 1,000W to 1,500W heater is usually enough to take the chill off a small bedroom or study. A larger or draughtier room may need 2,000W or more, but it will cost more to run, and if the room loses heat through single glazing or gaps under doors, you're paying to warm the street. Fix the cheapest draughts first; see how to cut heating costs in a UK flat.
Plug heaters straight into a wall socket, not an extension lead or multi-way adaptor, and keep them well away from curtains, bedding and clothes. Never use one to dry washing. Our electric heater safety article covers placement and checks in more detail.
Cold rooms are prone to condensation. If you're heating one room with a portable heater, keep the others gently warm or ventilated so moisture doesn't collect on cold walls. A dehumidifier helps if you dry washing indoors. Our article on condensation and black mould explains how to balance warmth and ventilation.
How you use a heater makes as much difference to the bill as which one you buy. Close the door of the room you're heating and put a draught excluder along the bottom; there's no point warming a hallway. Set the thermostat to a comfortable level, often around the 18°C the NHS suggests for rooms you use, rather than running the heater on full power and switching it off when it gets too hot. Use the timer to warm a home office for 20 to 30 minutes before you start, then let the thermostat hold the temperature.
Position matters too. A heater placed near the coldest part of the room, often by a window or outside wall, counters the cold air coming off it, but always keep the manufacturer's clearance from curtains and furniture. Don't tuck it in a corner behind a desk where the warm air can't circulate.
Track the real cost for a week. If you have a smart meter, check the in-home display or app with the heater on and off. If you don't, a cheap plug-in energy monitor between the socket and heater shows exactly how many kWh it uses. Many people are surprised: a heater left on "just for the evening" every day can add a noticeable amount to a monthly bill, which is exactly the information you need to decide whether a heated throw, an extra layer or better draught-proofing would do the job for less.
If you rent and your central heating is broken or can't keep the home warm, a portable heater should be a stopgap, not the fix. Report the fault to your landlord in writing. Some landlords provide temporary heaters during repairs; ask. Keep a note of what you spend running plug-in heaters while you wait, in case you need to raise it later.
